2020 Foresight

The old saying is, “Hindsight is 2020.” To me this just speaks of missed opportunities. It’s the classic “woulda, shoulda, coulda.” I want to challenge you to flip this saying around and embrace the concept of “2020 foresight”.
Foresight is defined as the ability to predict, or the action of predicting what will happen or be needed in the future. In order to be successful at whatever goal you have, you must have a plan for accomplishing that goal. In order to create a plan, you much have foresight. You have to know what steps are required to accomplish the goal. You also have to be able to anticipate any potential obstacles that may block you from being successful.
When it comes to improving your health and fitness, I would argue that most of us have a relatively good idea of what to do. We also have a pretty good idea of what not to do. The challenge lies in making the best choices. How many times have you looked back after a party and said, “Wow, I shouldn’t have had that last drink (or handful of chips or piece of cake, etc).” That’s hindsight. You probably even knew in the moment that it wasn’t a good idea, but you weren’t thinking ahead. You were living in the moment … fun, but often comes with consequences. Utilizing the principle of “2020 foresight” you would have thought ahead and hopefully made a better choice.
I’m not saying you can’t learn from history or even missed opportunities, but I believe there is more to be gained by embodying the spirit of Franklin Covey and “Start with the end in mind.” Keep your goals at the forefront of your thoughts. Let your goals be your beacon for making decisions so you no longer have to look back and say, “Man, if I knew then what I know now …”
Foresight is 2020.
