Occupation: Head coach at Kitsap CrossFit
First CrossFit WOD (besides Baseline and Fundamentals):I can’t remember the rep scheme, but it involved burpees, wall balls and 400m runs.
First thought after First CrossFit WOD: As someone who had been running 10 miles 5 days a week I though it would be easy and I was in pretty good shape, however as the plethora of mothers passed me, even on the run, I had a painful realization of how the smallest variation like wall balls and burpees destroyed my physical fitness beliefs!
Before CrossFit I did: I grew up playing all kinds of sports, but in high school my main focus was football. In college I played rugby to continue that physical destruction I knew so well. Eventually I turned to running with some minor weight lifting after shattering my arm at rugby practice. However, before running I had to go through some good weight gain and depression that only a whopper could cure while watching the biggest loser. Yes, that was me! Something snapped one day and I ran at least 3 miles a day straight for two months. Eventually it lead to a couple full marathons which I actually did enjoy surprisingly enough.
Favorite CrossFit exercise/Least favorite CrossFit exercise: combining these two – My favorite and my least favorite has changed over the 4-5 years I’ve been doing this. I would say at least at one point I have hated all of them with a bitter passion and eventually loved them all and wished they were in every workout. However, I hated back squats originally cause of terrible mobility and that hasn’t ever fully changed, but I love them for the raw strength and power it makes me feel. I love doubleunders because I can have moments of great ability with them, but gymnastics movements in general I enjoy. Having not been able to do a pull up when I started CrossFit they still have a wonderful place in my heart.
I love Kitsap CrossFit because: Having been to quite a few gyms and teaching before I came to Kitsap I can honestly say I haven’t seen the incredible full package that Kitsap offers and encompasses in any other place. We have a great number of devoted people that come to fight every day and while some classes may be larger, it only helps to push me more and connect me with the great people/athletes and community we have. Keep it up!
Most surprising accomplishment: The longest strict body weight movement for me to obtain has been a handstand push-up. With shoulder injuries there was a lot of doubt in my head it I would even do one. I’ve always been able to “cheat” and use my body movement and coordination to easily conquer the moment pure strength was always an issue. While they are not easy and some days I’m still too sore or tired to get one. I have been able to link 4 together before and it still shocks and amazes me.
Short Term Goals: I want to build the strength for a strict muscle up.
Long Term Goals: 200lb snatch and 275 clean and jerk.
Hobbies: CROSSFIT! However, I also enjoy biking, camping, fishing and I am an avid beach comber where I tend to look for agates. I may or may not have hundreds in bags strewn on my floor.
Favorite food: Sushi, if only rice was a vegetable!!!
Freestyle: (share something interesting we haven’t covered):I love to sing and play the guitar. If I break out in song randomly it just means I’m comfortable where I am which is good.
